Over the past 35 years I have read articles on bait and bait making but the most potent information I have found in very many ways has come from my own research and real-life bait testing, and conversations with aquaculture feed designers and some of the leading fishing company bosses some of whom I knew back before commercial baits came along. Like I said I want to point out some mistakes even seasoned experienced anglers do in regards to making homemade baits and even in regard to how they treat readymade baits to attempt to maximise their performance so they catch more fish.

Going out on a boat with a friend

Thank them for taking you out. Boats are very expensive to run, so be willing to chip in on gas, food, drinks, boat ramp fees and anything else needed for the trip. Honestly, the more you chip in on the trip, the more likely that they will ask you to go out again.

The number one rule on the boat is that the Captain makes the rules on their boat, not you. If you want to make the rules, go buy your own boat.
Ask where the owner/Captain of the boat wants you to fish. For instance, in the case of flats boats and bass boats, the Captain has the right to the front.
Don’t tell the Captain where to fish, or it may be a long swim back to shore! If they ask you for your advice, and you actually have some knowledge of the fishing area, then go ahead and give it; but do it in a nice way, and educate them on what you know. On the other hand, if you don’t know the area, then keep your mouth shut. Let them be the Captain – For the good of all the fishermen on board!
Never take control of the boat unless you are asked to. Remember the store adage that if you break it, you buy it!

Charter Boats

The Captain makes the rules, but you don’t buy the gas and pay the ramp fees. It is still a good idea to bring some drinks and food, unless the boat supplies these things included with the fee you pay.

Wade fishing can be a great way to catch fish at a very small cost, but there are things you better know if you never have tried it before. If you ask other fishermen about wade fishing, I am sure that you will hear all kinds of stories regarding why many of them will never try it. So, before we get into the things that can happen, let’s get into what you should have before you go wade fishing.

Fishing Equipment

There are a few pieces of equipment that you need to ensure a good, and safe, wade fishing experience. First, you should have a good fishing rod, anywhere from six foot to seven and a half foot, with medium to heavy action. Next, you’ll need good saltwater reel. Why a saltwater reel? It’s going to get wet…Well, more like it’s going to spend some time underwater. What I like to do is to pack my reel with good reel grease. This helps to keep the saltwater out, and will make the reel last a lot longer. I do not recommend using any high dollar reels for this style of fishing, unless you just like to spend money. Also, when you’re done fishing, instead of rinsing it off with fresh water, steal some lemon Pledge from the house and spray it on the rod and reel. Something in this stuff counteracts the saltwater. Just wipe it off when it dries, and put it away.

Bait vs. Lures

Do your homework before you go out. In other words, think about what species of fish you are going after and what their natural prey is. It is simple in that one only has to bait up a hook and throw the line in the water, and it is effective because the presence of live bait is a temptation that hardly any fish can resist!

Choose a location. Make sure to fish in water that actually has fish in it. If there aren’t any fish, you aren’t going to catch anything. Many newspapers have local fishing reports that will list locations and tell you what fish, if any, are biting and what they’re biting on. You can also ask around at angling shops, marinas and camping supply stores in the area. You can also check by throwing in food scraps and waiting a few minutes.

Choose your bait, and your hooks. Once you have some idea of what fish you’re looking to catch and what they’re eating, you can pick the right bait. You need hooks that will FIT INTO the fish’s mouth. #1 hooks work well for many things, but size 8 to 5/0 will work well for some fish. Ask your local tackle shop about the hook sizing system (i.e. 6,4,2,1,1/0, 2/0). The smaller the hook the better the chance of a bite, also a very thin line will result in more bites.
